The BYOC model allows you to choose your own cloud provider and available regions, and is more economical at scale. We charge per Kubernetes node, which means that you can run many small PostgreSQL instances (and branches) on fewer nodes.

Xata is using a distributed storage system in order to separate compute from storage. This storage layer talks to each database server over a high-performance protocol (NVMe/TCP) that adds almost no delay, so reads and writes complete quickly.
We are running vanilla PostgreSQL, without any core modifications and without intrusive extensions. This gives us the performance of the battle-tested and optimized PostgreSQL code base.
